Juilliard Manuscript Collection

The Juilliard Manuscript Collection contains 140 sketches, proofs, and first editions donated to the school in 2006 by Bruce Kovner, as well as selected manuscripts from the Juilliard Library's Peter Jay Sharp Special Collections. The collection features some of the most important works and composers of music history.
CQ Congress Collection

CQ Press Congress Collection is a research and reference tool for analyzing the history and development, legislation, powers, and personalities of the U.S. Congress. This data is presented with commentary and includes biographical and voting data for members of Congress, legislative information organized by topic, key votes, legislative analysis, interest group scores of members, encyclopedic information on Congress, and Supreme Court case summaries relating to the structure and powers of Congress.
BAR Digital Collection

With over 3,600 titles published, the BAR Collection offers the largest series of academic archaeology titles in the world, covering all time periods from prehistory, through classical archaeology, to 20th century archaeology around the globe. Pataphysics collection

An archive of letters sent by Stanley Chapman (London) to Juan Esteban Fassio (Buenos Aires-Argentina). The collection contains 254 manuscript and typewritten letters, all signed by Stanley Chapman, addressed to Juan Esteban Fassio between March 5, 1957 and May 24, 1978. Three letters mention the visit of Jorge Luis Borges to London in 1971. The papers also include 95 photographs, many with handwritten commentaries by Chapman on the reverse. The letter archive reflects a writing relationship of over twenty years between two persons who had in common a Pataphysical vision of the world around them, to the point that Chapman employed pataphysical language in the majority of his letters.
Zine Collection

An ongoing collection of zines added to the holdings of the University of Miami Libraries Special Collections. Zines are typically independent and self published booklets popular in underground subcultures. The first zines were fanzines, started in the early 20th century by science fiction fans documenting the genre. The format truly took off with the punk rock movement of the 1970s, as a do-it-yourself spirit inspired legions of underground punk fans to start raw but vibrant journals documenting the nascent music scenes in their communities. Zine topics would broaden throughout the 1980s and 1990s to cover a variety of subject areas, from comics to anarchist politics to women’s rights, to more mundane subjects like dumpster diving, alternative fashions, tattoo art, and much more. Despite the expansion of topics, the format usually remained the same—self-published booklets printed in limited editions and typically produced with a photocopy machine.
Designer collection

This collection contains information about and writings of designers from fashion design as well as interior design. Included is the typescript of "Nobody's Fault but My Own, Unlimited", a memoir of Dora Sarin's memoirs of her Post-World War II New York fashion business, and 14 pieces of correspondence from interior designer David Hicks as well as 12 pieces of press clippings about Hicks, his work and family. The collection also contains ephemera from Suzanne Caygill's life, including six color swatches, a personal notebook, lecture hand-outs, and one booklet entitled "Everyone is talking about Suzanne."
Orishas Collection

The Orichas Collection consists of the series of drawings by Cuban-born artist Alberto del Pozo (1946-1992) of the deities of Afro-Cuban Santería. The Collection includes 17 original illustrations in pen, crayon, and ink on paper; signed and unsigned lithographs of these drawings; and catalogs and notecards of the Orichas series. Lithographs, catalogs, and notecards are available for purchase.
Viewbooks Collection

The collection contains books, magazines, photograph albums, souvenirs and booklets of Cuban views since 1850 to the present. Also contains illustrated card games and stamps.

Capturing Every Patron Interaction: The Move from Paper Statistics to an Electronic System to Track the Whole Library

Reference departments track patron interactions to illustrate the type and number of services provided as well as to tailor librarians’ time and expertise to the interest and needs of their patrons. Until 2010, the Reference, Education, and Community Engagement Department at the Calder Memorial Library tracked statistics using a complicated system of paper tic sheets and two Excel™ spreadsheets. After considering different electronic systems, the department decided to employ an electronic form created with SurveyMonkey™ to track patron interactions. After the system had been in place for three months, the authors administered a Satisfaction and Use survey to collect faculty and staff feedback on the new system. Seven months later the authors undertook usability testing to collect further evaluative data on the electronic form. The patron interaction form continues to be used to collect statistics, provide data for annual reviews, and recognize the contributions of all faculty and staff at the library.
Mapping trends in reef hard bottom and key SEDAR species throughout the Gulf of Mexico as a means to establish better survey design and determine essential fish habitat.

The primary objective of the reef fish survey program at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Panama City Laboratory is to collect video based assessments of the relative abundance of reef fish populations and a general overview of the habitat classification and composition to provide scientific data to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) for Southeast Data, Assessment, and Review (SEDAR) stock assessments. To conduct more effective and cost efficient reef fish surveys, the reef fish survey program also collects side scan sonar data to map the benthic terrain of the Gulf of Mexico and identify reef hard bottom regions, which provide essential habitat for reef fish. As an intern within this program, I have assisted with the field and office work to collect, enter and analyze the data from these both of these surveys while focusing my project on the classification and mapping of side scan data. My primary objective was to classify the side scan imagery into standardized “geoform” classifications, agreed upon by the Panama City Lab and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI)’s collaborative mapping efforts throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Once completed, the overall goal would then be to determine spatial trends among reef hard bottom sites and the respective geoforms throughout the survey region. Correlating this side scan data with data collected from the reef fish survey would then allow me to determine species distributions and species-habitat correlations, helping to initiate the possibility of ecosystem based management (EBM) and the development of better survey design.
Preliminary estimates of lung volume capacity in free diving harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus)

Diving plays a central role in the life histories of marine mammals. Marine mammals have many adaptations that allow them to store oxygen more effectively than terrestrial mammals. They also go through a number of physiological changes during their dives that allow them to further conserve and effectively utilize oxygen during periods of apnea. There have been many studies done investigating the oxygen storage and utilization of diving marine mammals, but very few that focus on the role the lungs play during dives. A two-part project was conducted at University of California Santa Cruz’s Pinniped Cognition and Sensory Systems Laboratory to collect preliminary estimates of lung volume for harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). Part one was focused on training two animals, one Pacific harbor seal and one California sea lion, to cooperatively participate in a research task designed to collect and measure the volume of air the exhale after diving. The second part of the project had a goal of collecting preliminary lung volume estimates based on data collected from the participating animals. For the first part of the project both research subjects were able to successfully complete the training and could reliably participate in the research task. Part two looked at volume of air expired for each subject and how other variables may factor into the volume of air produced for each trial. It was determined that outside variables have little to no influence on the volume of air expired by either subject. Part two also examined the difference in average volume of air expired between subjects. These results were significant and suggest that seals may dive with a larger lung volume than sea lions on average. The results of this study suggest that there may be opportunity to develop a non-invasive procedure to measure lung volume in both captive and wild live animals and the possibility of acoustic measure should be further considered.
